Fun Fact: Greeting Cards originated in Germany and can be dated back to the early 1400s.
“So they said to him,
“Sir, give us this bread always.”
Jesus said to them,
“I am the bread of life;
whoever comes to me will never hunger,
and whoever believes in me will never thirst.”
The passage above is an excerpt from today’s Gospel, John 6: 24-35. To me this is the most important part of this Sunday’s Gospel. But before Jesus tells the people He is the Bread of Life the people were waiting for him. And when Jesus didn’t show, they went looking for Him. So they got in their boats like Jesus had and went to Capernaum to find him. Before they set foot on the shore they saw him and shouted from “across the sea” they didn’t wait to get on the land to talk to him, they couldn’t wait, they couldn’t wait any longer. They longed for Jesus so much that they shouted from the water. And the Gospel doesn’t say they were 10 feet from the shore. It says they were ACROSS the sea. They were literally a mile from Jesus and they shouted to him.
And Jesus’ response is priceless, it’s amazing. He says, “Amen, amen, I say to you,
you are looking for me not because you saw signs but because you ate the loaves and were filled.” He is telling them, that they didn’t come to Capernaum to find him because someone told them He was there. They came because they longed for Jesus, they thirsted for Him, they hungered for Him.
The people respond by asking Jesus how they can accomplish the works of God. He answers them by saying, “This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent.” The Gospel goes on to connect to the Old Testament by saying that “Our Ancestors ate manna in the desert as it is written He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”
Jesus tells the people that Moses didn’t give them bread from Heaven but it was God who gives us, still to this day, the TRUE BREAD FROM HEAVEN; the true bread that gives life to the world. He is saying that God gives us the bread therefore giving us life.
Don’t wait to be at the shore; shout from across the sea to Jesus, and he will respond.
